To do this, you have to be in the right space. As I've stated in previous posts, when you are in the control of your ego-mind, you won't think of seeking guidance and if it arrives unbidden you won't hear it because the ego-mind is not receptive to that guidance.
So if you want to seek and receive guidance from Buddha/god*/the universe, you have to be free of your ego-mind, at least at that moment. But, really, that is where you need to be throughout the day, because you never know when you need or will receive guidance.
That raises the question of how to be free of your ego-mind. Indeed that is the question at the center of almost any spiritual practice. Most of my posts in one way or another address this issue and I have presented various practices to help you attain this goal. But perhaps the most straight-forward is the practice, related in previous posts, of choosing to be one with your true Buddha nature, your divinity, the child of the universe within you.
To do this, as I have related elsewhere, you must first acknowledge that things are the way they are because it's just the way it is; it is meant to be and all is ok. That requires deep faith in the universe – and god is the universe, not some force that answers your prayers or makes things happen.
You might well ask, if god is not that bearded gentlemen of the Old Testament, how can you receive guidance from god. Because god, buddha, the child of the universe is within you. You. It is your true self, the person you were when you were born (see the post, "The Miracle that Is You."). And so the guidance you receive actually comes from within you.
When you can acknowledge that, which frees you of all the strivings and emotions of the ego-mind regarding the here and now, you are in a place where you can choose to be one with your divinity, the child of the universe within you.
When you do that (and I do it verbally everyday), you then invite god into your subconscious, to be your subconscious, filling you with abundance and light, faith and strength, and humility, so that you radiate light and are a light unto yourself and others. Do this throughout the day; when you are aware that you are not radiating light, put yourself back in that space. And remember to be specific about what you are seeking guidance on.
This is sending your positive energy out rather than absorbing the negative energy in the world around you, as I relate in my post, "Changing the Direction of Your Energy Flow." When you do this pro-active activity, you generate a forcefield around you that your ego-mind, mara, and the devil cannot penetrate.
Now you are in a place where you will seek guidance, hear the guidance you receive, and choose to follow that guidance.

* I do not capitalize "god" because I want to always make clear that the god I am referring to is not the traditional Judeo-Christian God, but the divinity within you. It is not separate from you but is one with your true self.
